MANILA, Philippines — Alfred Vargas and his wife Yasmine have filed 20 counts of cyber libel following a dispute linked to an alleged bullying incident involving their child.
In a statement on Monday, Vargas said the family initially sought to address the matter privately but decided to pursue legal action after those efforts failed.
“In recent days, our family has been in the spotlight after we made the difficult decision to stand up for our son. I am deeply thankful for the messages of support we’ve received, as well as the sincere questions from those who wish to understand what happened. I would like to respond with clarity and respect,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude for public support, saying it has helped sustain his family during a difficult time.
“Thank you very much to everyone who sent prayers, support, and love to us. Truly, these have been a source of strength for our family as we go through this,” Vargas said.
Describing himself as “naturally shy and reserved,” Vargas said they chose to remain silent at first “for the sake of our children, who have already gone through intense pain and trauma.”
“But there comes a point when silence is no longer an option,” he added.
Vargas explained that their decision to speak out was rooted in protecting their child
“We chose to speak out — not because we want to argue, but because we love our children. For them, and for all children experiencing bullying, we are taking a stand,” he said.
He confirmed that legal steps have already been taken.
“We tried to resolve the matter through proper dialogue last February, but instead, the posts on social media containing false accusations against me, my spouse, and our family continued—even after we chose to remain silent. This can no longer continue,” he said.
According to Vargas, the allegations circulating online are “false and are meant to damage our name and reputation.”
He said the family has opted to seek redress through proper legal channels.
“We chose to go through the proper process. We have already filed a complaint and submitted our evidence. We trust that the truth will come out,” he said.
The case stems from a dispute involving their child and alleged bullying that later escalated on social media.
Vargas also appealed to the public to exercise restraint in online discussions.
“To the public, we appeal: Let us choose kindness. Let us not add to the pain through defamation, speculation, or hurtful words—especially online,” he said.
“Bullying, in any form, has no place in our community,” he added.
